Heerlen & Brussels, Belgium

It's been a relaxing couple of days since we arrived in Heerlen.  While Heidi was at work, we did some laundry and went to the local grocery store and mall.  Everything is with a short walk which is so nice.

Heidi's place is wonderful.  One side is the train station.  The other looks out onto a courtyard. The apartments across the way have lovely decorated balconies and some Christmas trees can be seen in the windows.

The windows in Heidi's living room are decorated too.  It makes it extra special.

Last night we went to Heidi's favourite pizza restaurant.  She is known there.  When the waiter saw her, he started singing the German song Heidi.
We went to Brussels today.  What an amazing city.

We experienced Belgium waffles.  Good Lord are they good.  I never was much for waffles, however, whatever ingredients they use to make them makes them delicious.  My waffle had strawberries and whipped cream on it.  Heidi had caramel, strawberries, whipped cream and chocolate on it.  Cathy choose to just have whipped cream on hers. The first picture is the shop we got the waffles.

Belgium waffles and Frites (fries) are the thing in Brussels.  There are line ups at every place that sells them.  This next picture was a display of the waffles being sold in this shop.

Oh and Belgium chocolates!  Lots of stores to choose from.  This is one store we went in.

Again, there was a long line up to pay in this store.

We also tried the famous frites with mayo.  Oh yum.  Heidi says they are good because they are cooked twice in two different oils. They are also fresh.  No frozen fries here. Mom, you would have loved them.
This next picture is of Mannekin Pis.  Manneken Pis is a statue of a little boy urinating in the center of Brussels.  The 55.5 cm tall little man on a pedestal has become one of the most famous Belgian and Brussels monuments and a symbol/mascot of the city of Brussels.  He is dressed in costumes for half of the year and even has an official dresser.  Every year, Brussels City’s cultural department draws up an official calendar marking about 130 occasions for dressing the statue.  As the official dresser, it is Nicolas Edelman’s duty to implement this calendar.
We had a great day!

Steps today - 12,759.
